Why Men Shouldn't Ignore Recommended Health Screenings
Are you putting off that annual checkup? Adding another item to an already packed schedule can be tricky, but these brief appointments are more important than you may think. Learn about common health screenings for men, and why they matter.

Life moves fast, and it’s easy to put your own well-being on the back burner amidst work and family responsibilities. But sometimes, it’s more than just a busy schedule — in one study, a majority of men revealed that they actively avoid routine medical visits, often waiting until a serious problem arises.

June is Men’s Health Month, and at Internal Medicine Partners, we’re focusing on helping men maintain optimal health for life. Alejandro Blanco, MD, and Ralph Rodriguez, MD, offer comprehensive annual physical exams and health screenings to catch potential issues early and keep you feeling your best.

Are you putting off your yearly checkup? Here, learn why you shouldn’t ignore these essential appointments, and how proactive screening benefits your future.

Why ignorance isn’t bliss: The importance of routine checkups

Your annual physical is more than just another item to check off your to-do list. These visits provide you the opportunity to ask questions, discuss concerns, and get a better understanding of your current health.

For men, certain serious conditions can develop without clear signs. Issues like hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes, and some cancers often progress quietly, presenting no alarming symptoms until they reach an advanced stage.

That’s why checkups are so important, even if you feel perfectly healthy — our team makes sure you receive recommended health screenings based on your age, medical history, and individual risk factors.

Understanding your health screenings

Routine screenings can uncover potential problems long before you feel unwell. Catching these concerns early may mean simpler, less invasive treatments, more positive outcomes, and a better chance of staying healthy and active for years to come.

Let’s take a look at some examples of common screenings for men and when you need them:

Blood sugar and cholesterol screenings

Blood sugar and cholesterol screenings typically start around age 35, or sooner if you have certain risk factors, such as being overweight. These simple blood tests can identify early indicators of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease before they become more serious.

Prostate exam

For men 50 and over, we may screen for prostate cancer during your physical. This often involves a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and may include a digital rectal exam (DRE). If you have a family history of prostate cancer, we may recommend starting these screenings at age 45.

Colorectal cancer screening

Regular screening for colorectal cancer is a highly effective way to catch this disease at its earliest, most treatable stages. Screening usually begins at age 45, but we may suggest starting earlier if you have risk factors like a history of inflammatory bowel disease, polyps, or if colorectal cancer or polyps run in your family.
